I have been thrift shopping for about 10 years now and in the beginning walking into a thrift store was very intimidating. Rows and rows of clothes, sometimes not categorized by size. Definitely not categorized by style, color or really anything. Everything is jammed together but among the ugly, outdated clothes there are little gems just waiting to be found, worn or re-fashioned....by you! A thrift shop can be a challenge at times so I'd have a couple tips I'd like to share on how to overcome the shopping experience and find yourself those one of a kind treasures.
1. Make a list before you go.
I know usually you never make a list when you go clothes shopping, but when you thrift shop its important to know what exactly you are looking for.
2. Browse the return/dressing room racks.
Sometimes they are empty because the employees have returned the clothing, but if not you may be able find some real treasures that didn't fit other people just hanging there. I definitely try to make my way over to the racks at the beginning and end of my shopping.
3. Look for specifics while scanning.
With your list in hand keep in mind the specifics you want but also scan for patterns and textures that your drawn to. For instance even if I'm looking for a floral shirt I tend to pull out gray shirts and anything striped. I don't move every single shirt to look at, but run your hand over the shoulders of the hangers or scan with your eyes and see what jumps out at you.
4. Be mindful of time
If you are there with kids in tow only look for your specific items. For instance, if you really want to find a jacket don't start looking at jeans and shoes. Go straight to what you are looking for and if the kids are okay then move onto another section. If you are lucky to be on your own and you have time that's when you can really scan and handpick things out of the racks.
Once you get the hang of it, thrift shopping is invaluable. There are great pieces of clothing at amazing prices. Since I like to refashion clothe,s thrifting provides an endless supply of cheap and amazing quality clothing just waiting to be worn again!
