I have wanted to change up one of the walls in my house for awhile now. Maybe it's the start of a new year or because my friend is changing up her decor in her house I finally am actually doing it. I call this wall my hodge podge wall. Random sketches or drawings or ceramic artwork are on the wall. I like it all hodge podgy but wanted to change a few things out. I decided having a chalkboard of some sort would be fun and cute. I can draw pictures or write inspirational quotes or just let my 3 year old have it and create a masterpiece. I realized though I didn't want to use just a regular chalkboard. A canvas would make it fun and different and really make anything look like a special drawing I bought right? I only used four things (okay five if you count the chalk) and it was very easy.
I used a 18x24 sized canvas from JoAnn Fabrics (50% off right now!) the paint is from Michaels as well as the Chalkboard coating and paintbrush.
I decided to use white as my background. I want to be able to use all different colors of chalk and I just like the idea of a blank canvas. You could use any color and make it a statement piece that really stands out though! When you are painting with your acrylic paint make sure to cover the canvas evenly and try to not leave brush strokes. I went over my canvas twice, even though I used white paint, just to make sure it covered the canvas evenly.
Once the paint is dry you can use your Clear Chalkboard Coating. This is the best stuff ever. I have used it before on this project. You can seriously use it on any surface to turn it into a chalkboard! It's not that expensive and you can find it at Michaels or JoAnn Fabrics. (remember always print off a coupon or download their app onto your phones to get the coupons so you don't have to pay full price)
Follow the directions on the back of the bottle. It's just two coats of the coating and it's done!
Lastly cure the chalkboard! I used a white piece of chalk and ran it over the whole board. Let it sit for 24 hours and then wipe it off with a rag. All done! I love how my new canvas chalkboard looks! It didn't cost a lot of money and it's a fun piece to have hanging in my house!
First of all I am working on this wall so I apologize for all the craziness around the canvas chalkboard. You can see get an idea of how large the canvas is and how I'm going to use it though! Sophia has been watching Daniel Tiger quite a bit and they have this saying in one of her favorite episodes. She has been saying this during the day (it melts my heart every time) and since Valentines Day is just a few days away I figured it's a perfect reminder of how I think we all feel about our families!
Hope you give this a try! So easy to customize the color and style to fit your home. I think it adds a fun unexpected element to a space on your wall!
