A few months back I gave up shopping for one month. Sooooo hard. I did it because I really wanted to see how many clothes I have, what I use, what I don't etc. During that time it totally changed my outlook on buying clothes. I started to buy less and I slowly got rid of some things. I probably got rid of one garbage bag of clothes. It was a big bag but I still had a ton of clothes, purses and shoes. My walk in closet was full even after the small purge. There were some things I knew I wore sometimes or things that I didn't really like but I just wanted to hold onto them. For what reason I don't know. The end of last year I found this blog. After reading her thought process (and the shock of a 37 piece wardrobe wore off) I started to get what a good happy wardrobe looked like. I decided to seriously cut waaaaay back. Like way way back. I got rid of five garbage bags of shorts, pants, jeans, shirts, coats, shoes and purses. Five. Hefty. Bags. Here are a few pics of what I had (this is after garbage bag number 1) but before I really dove in and got rid of everything that was just "okay".
I took these with my cell phone so the quality is not too good. I also didn't get the other side of my closet either. I had clothes taking up the whole rack as well.
I own way more than 37 pieces of clothing. I don't think I'll ever have that small of a wardrobe. I love shopping and clothes too much! However I took some of the advice on having what you love and it has changed me and my closet! I literally go into my closet to choose something and a lot of times I can't decide! There are too many choices! I could close my eyes, pick anything and I'm happy. That's never happened before. There isn't anything that is "okay" in my closet anymore. I love each and every piece. Here's what I have in my closet now!
My main clothes. This includes dresses I could wear to dinner or out, any layering pieces etc.
Off to the left are purses I use everyday, scarves and you can see my shoe holder there. Purses on the shelf above are my clutches, going out purses, canvas totes and cross body bags.
Straight across from my purses I have my coats (I still need some even though I live in FL) for our week of Winter and for when I travel back to WA. I also keep my wedding/Holiday extra dressy dresses here. I know for some people this could be quite a bit of clothes, but for me this is the least amount of clothes I have owned in probably 13 years. In addition to the clothes in my closet I do have a dresser drawer of jeans, but I went from having 27 pairs of pants to 8 pairs. It feels good.
With that being said I love shopping! It's my outlet. It's my un-mommy time. There aren't time constraints, I can choose what I like or what I don't like and roam the aisles as I please! (I do have a new way I shop for myself and I'll be doing a post on that later) I am definitely not taking shopping completely out of my life (or in un-fancys case only shop 4 times a year) but as soon as an article of clothing becomes something I'm bored with and I notice I'm not reaching for that shirt or a pair of pants it's out! I love my new closet and everything it provides. What about you? Do you hold onto all your clothes or just keep the ones you love?
Hi I'm Ruth!
I love fashion and all things that make up a wardrobe. I hope to inspire you to try new trends, enjoy the classics and not to be afraid to dress for yourself!
