The beginning of this year I went through my kitchen and got rid of all my mismatched dishes, glasses, silverware etc. I decided to get white un matching dishes (something I've wanted to do for a long time just never did) and found them all at the Goodwill. Hello 8 place setting for $20! I've also been wanting to get some cute mugs for my coffee habit, but don't want to spend a ton of money on them. I have seen people decorating mugs all the time on Pinterest and honestly I tried it before. It was a colossal fail. However, when I did this before I hadn't learned about paint pens. In my previous mug decorating I had used a sharpie and baked it in the oven like everyone said to do. The pen rubbed off very easily even before I washed it!. I never thought about trying it again but then I came across the miracle workers for DIY painters. Paint pens, They have them specifically for ceramic and glass! JoAnn Fabrics and Michaels carry them and they are only about 4-5 bucks. I found a copper color pen and then got my thrift shopping on and found a few white mugs. So here is my DIY decorative mug tutorial.
All you have to do is just write or design whatever you want on your mug! You directly apply the paint pen and that's it! I did let it sit for 24 hours without washing. If you wanted more of a guide to use you could write in pencil whatever saying or design you wanted and then trace over it with the paint pen. The pencil will wipe off when you wash it!
I spent $6 for the pen (which I can use again on whatever I want) and the two mugs. I just need to find a few more to complete my set! I washed both these mugs by hand, again after letting them dry 24 hours, and nothing came off! I wouldn't put them in the dishwasher, it would probably be too hot for the paint, but washing a coffee mug by hand is no big deal for me. I love designing my own mugs because I get to put whatever I want on them! It also saves me quite a bit of money, as on Etsy ones like these are going for upwards of $12-$18 for ONE! Such an easy and inexpensive DIY project! Hope you have a great Wednesday! Thanks for reading!
