2.iPad/iPhone-or as I call it the lifesaver. I bring this out when a meltdown is going to happen. I try to hold out until the trip is half over so she is not glued to it the entire time, but this is definitely a necessity when traveling.
3. Kid Headphones-We forgot kid headphones once and never again will forget. They wanted her to wear adult in the ear headphones and it totally did not work.
4.Tote for busy activities-I pack crayons, small notebook, coloring books, re-sticker books, window stickies and books all together in one pack. I can just grab it when she's starting to fidget or during take off and not have to rummage through a purse or backpack to find things. I try to keep other toys (toy cars, magnetic dress up dolls, her dolly etc.) separate from her activities.
5. Snack bag/bathroom bag- Food always gets smashed or crumbled, juice leaks or spills so I make sure to use a zipped bag to maintain the mess. (on a side note if you're using bottles put it in there too. They make great formula travel jars where the formula is pre-made which is a lifesaver when you have a screaming baby ) I pack crackers, string cheese, dried fruit, chips, granola bars, pbj sandwich and I use a ziplock bag where I keep the special emergency treats. (lollipops, gum, gummy bears etc.) Also include zip lock bags in case all the food doesn't get eaten at once. You can use a baggie to keep it enclosed until they want it again! Also place a load of hand wipes in here!
I also use a smaller bag enclosed bag like this for the bathroom. It's easy to grab and includes an extra pair of leggings, many diapers, wipes, diaper creme and ziplock bags. It's perfect to grab everything all at once instead of looking for it or forgetting something once your back there. The ziplock bags are ut the used wipes and diapers in when throwing them out.
6-9. I dress Sophia in layers when we travel. Sometimes planes are freezing or they are unbearably hot. I usually have her wear a t-shirt and sweater on the flight. I have learned to have her wear color. I dressed her in a white shirt and cardigan once....mommy fail. It was so colorful by the time we landed and it never washed out. Now I try and make sure to wear cute colorful clothes so the spills aren't as noticeable. I also want her to be comfortable with leggings and soft shoes. I love Minnetonka's. Her feet will always be warm and comfy with them! And always always always bring a set of extra clothes!!!
I have seen all types of parents doing their thing on airplanes. You know your child best and the best way to have a less stressful time is just go with the flow. Sophia gets free reign to eat chips, lollipops, watch movies and do whatever she wants. It makes for a much easier time on an airplane if I just relax and focus on letting her have a good time. I know there will be at least one meltdown at some point, but accepting that fact takes the pressure I feel to have a "perfect" child on an airplane. And for that lovely bah humbug person on your flight who just never has liked children? Ignore them. You'll never see them again and after a few hours it'll all be over with. Try and enjoy making some fun and probably crazy memories with your children that you can laugh about later in life! Happy Travels!
